Friday, 1st September 2017, was a huge day for us at StartPreneurs. 1st September, marked the beginning of new things for the Alpha Cohorts. The Alpha Cohorts, is one of a kind, it is made up startups applying Machine Learning, Augmented Reality, Big Data, Virtual Reality, and Artificial Intelligence. They are the first in their various industries, hence, Alpha. Every journey of all Cohorts in StartPreneurs begins with the application for acceleration. At StartPreneurs we received over 100 applications during the 6 weeks of applications. Applications finally closed end of July, with 12 startups selected.
The next phase was then screening and selection. The selection process involved meetings and phone calls, we realized some of the startups were not ready and StartPreneurs terminated their applications. Some others after closer inspection did not fit the minimum category required for acceleration. By the end of selection, there were only 5 StartUps left. SCUTA, Facetunez, Tiro Beauty, Glambox and Tech Aboki.
SCUTA, (Smart City Urban Transit App) is a bus hailing, transport solution. SCUTA uses Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Smart Algorithm and Geo-Tagging to optimize routes and transport people from their homes to their places of work and vice versa.
Facetunez, (Social Media Experience for Africa) is a brand marketing and social media app. Facetunez focuses on using Augmented Reality Filters to create interactive ads for user engagement for the small and big brands, alongside creating a diverse social media experience. The Social Media end of Facetunez is towards Africans, by making afrocentric AR filters, like those used in Snapchat.
Tiro Beauty, is a beauty app, that uses Machine Learning to connect beauty professionals to beauty customers. The app is optimised to also use geo-tagging to recommend the closest available beauty customer. Tiro Beauty is often called ‘the uber for beauty’.
Glambox, is “the beautiful, red box, that contains 5 carefully selected trendy beauty items, to target the Nigerian Beauty Consumer”. The Glambox is a unique product in the Nigerian market that simplifies the access to beauty items, by making them available in collections, with a free delivery option. Glambox uses Machine Learning and Big Data analysis to collect information on the Million Dollar Beauty industry in Nigeria. With this information Glambox creates consumer specific products.
Tech Aboki, is the startup that helps with all gadget repairs. They are the Aboki for all devices, with a warranty on all their fixes. They maintain a standard procedure for all their processes ensuring the best of services delivered at all times. Tech Aboki utilises Artificial Intelligence in the diagnosis of the devices they fix. They operate a self learning system, that can accurately determine the required repairs and cost implication, which gives the user instant feedback.
